THE RAILWAY REFORM LEAGUE.
Mr Samuel Vaile has jusb received from the Chairman (Mr J. G. Harkness, M.H.R.) of the Select Committee appointed to consider and report on the Railway Reform's League's petitions to the House of Representatives for a trial ofVaile's stage system, a letter asking whether he had any further evidence to give other than that which he bad already given before a committee of the House in 1886, or that which was contained in his correspondence with the railway authorities, and requesting him to furnish such evidence, if any, in writing to the Committee. The Executive Committee of the Auckland Railway Reform Leagtie met on the receipt of this letter, and passed a resolution to the effect that the League was noc prepared to advise Mr Vaile to give the Railway Babes Committee the large amount of additional evidence and information at'his disposal unless he be given the opportunity to conduct the .case in person for and on behalf of the. petitioners. On this subject Mr J. Duncan, Secretary to the League, has jusb received a letter from Mr T. Thompson, M.H.R., stating the Committee at first thought of summoning Mr Vaile ab once to give evidence before them, but afterwards decided otherwise. Mr Thompson intends (hesays) to strongly urge, when called in supporb of the petition in the House, that Mr Vaile should be afforded an opportunity of explaining his views to the Committee as early as possible. Mr F. J.MosB,M.H.R.,has also written to Mr Duncan, stating that the prospect of any report being brought up in time for action this session is doubtful. No action can in any case be taken but by the Government. '
