THE PROPOSED POLITICAL REFORM ASSOCIATION.

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —Mr R. Laishley's letter, which appeared in the Star of 17th inst., seems to me to hit the ricjht nail on the head, and it only requires that his suggestions be acted on to attain the object we all have at heart. I will give two instances where such an association would have rendered invaluable service, i.e., whon the primage duty and the retrenchment questions were being considered by Parliament. Now, theso two questions were subjects for discussion by our Chamber of Commerce on two separate occasions. At each meeting the conduct of the Government was most vigorottsiy protests forwarded to the' Ministers ; but what wero tho. results ? Practically nil. The Government no doubt received bhem, perhaps read them, but thab would bo all, as they no doubt think the Chamber has other duties to perform, and would pass these by. But how different the case would have been bad the Reform Association been formed and in operation. The Government would know thab they would have no rest till that injustice the primage duty was abolished, and due attention paid to financial reform. I would point to the work donoat Home by the Liberal, Radical and Conservative Associations, in the political education and improvement of bhe masses. —I am, etc., J. Court.
