The woodwork was righb*down flush wibh the bricks ; and a new stove jusb pub in exactly fitted tho! fireplace. The latter had become red-hob, i and, being in contact with the woodwork, set ib to smoulder, and at last to flame. Captain Field gob to work ab once, and tore down the mantelpiece. A bucket or two of water soon put the fire oufc There can be little doubt bhab had the fire baken place ab night ib would have been mosb serious. Even had ib been allowed to get a show to-day there would have been greab difficulty in extinguishing it. The Salvage Corps, Auckland Fire Brigade under Superintendent Hughes, and Grafton contingent were speedily on the spot, but through the prompt action of Capt. Field all they had to do was to return to their work.
