AN EXCURSION TO TIRI.
CASE AT THE POLICE COURT.
THAT the wheels of justice grind slowly was exemplified ab the Police Courb this morning, when William Spargo was called to answer to an alleged breach of the Shipping and Seamen's Act, by tokidgan excursion of 4a passengers to Tin Tin Island in the 8,8. Planet, on the 7bh of April, such boat nob having the requisite certificate. , ~ . Dr. Giles, R.M., was on the bench. Mr Hudson Williamson appeared for the proeecution, under instruction from Mr Thomas Hill, Collector of Customs. Mr Theo. Haulbain appeared for defendant, and pleaded not guilty. ; Evidence was given by .William James Jobson, engineer and surveyor, who deposed that the Planet was nob certified to go outlaid, a certain limit and nob to carry more than 29 passengers. _.........__ John Marsh, keeper of the Tin Tin light house, deposed tbab on Easter Monday the s.s. Planet brought a number of pas«j sengers to tho island. Stress of weabher compelled them to stay until Wednesday,, when the tugboat Awhina came for them. He was told bhere were 48 passengers. Alexander Campbell, master of the tug boar, also gave ovidence. Mr Williamson said that the case was only broughb as a warning, and a heavy penalty would nob be asked for. Mr Haulbain raised objecbions to the information, and the firs, was dismissed. Dr. Giles, however, considered thab there was proof bhab more than bhe proper, number of passengers had been carried on bhe day in question. He therefore inflicted a five of £1 and coats.
