AN INTERESTING LECTURE.
Mr C. D. McDodgald, of Dundee, Scotland, lectured before the Dundee Mechanical Society, on " 1 Watch EscapementsPast and Present," on December 21, 18S8. The lecturer showed the great importance of Dr. Hook's invention of the balance spring, which, together with the balance wheel, constituted, he said, the true timekeeping part of the watch. Tho chronometer, duplex, lever, cylinder, and virguia escapements werejoiinutely described with the aid of diagrams, and the properties of each as regards their influence on the timekeeping of the watch noted. He spoke at length of the duplex escapement, and expressed the opinion, from a acientific point of view, that ib was equal, if not superior, to the lover as an oacapemonb suitable for first-clasßpockebwatches. He referred to .he wonderful productions of the Water bury Watch Company, and stated that the merits of the duplex had been recognised by that company. A very large Waterbury model was shown in action, as well as all the or-, dihary productions of the Company. The method of cutting and setting up the teeth of the Waterbury 'scape wheel, one of which was sent round tho audience, was much admired, besides enlighteniug many upon the merit of Yankee productions. The meeting terminated with a hearty vote, iof thanks to Mr McDougald.—Extract from " Dundee Advertiser."
