The above gentleman came down by the last trip of the Wainui to take tho position of teacher of languages and mathematics to the college, and also as European police magistrate. On his arrival his appointment) was approved of by the new Premier. He had permission also to have the house as per letter of agreement, and the new Premier promised to send men to take his things up, but within two or three hours he was informed his appointment was cancelled and ho was.to leave the bouse at once. It was afterwards reported that the Governor wanted tho house for the use of one of the officials he was sending over. Mr Whitcombe replied he had been legally appointed and his appointment gazetted by the King in Council and his agreement signed by the late Premier, but all to no purpose ; he must leave, for the house was wanted*. However,-on the day the Wainui sailed, the Secretary of the High Commissioner came and offered him £50 and a free passage if be would leave, but he would not, and he has put hiaxase in the hands of Sir George Grey.
