Wellington, this day. The enormous progress made by the meat export trade of the colony within the last few years is shown by a return which has been compiled by Mr P. Cunningham, of Christchurch, at present in Wellington. The annual export of beef and mutton since the year 1882 has been as follows :—

It will be noticed that the export of the last six months alone far exceeds that for any whole year prior to 1888, while the stoadiness of the growth of the industry is most remarkable. Within the half-year no less than 967,746 animals were slaughtered, including 718,325 sheep and 249,421 lambs, while the beef exports made a total of 5,250,6031b5. Napier heads the list with 12,995,8951b mutton, 843,9591b lamb, 59,5561b beef, or 16,431,4101b in all. Lyttelton comes next with 10,220,8071b mutton, 563,0041b lamb, and 163 5 5711b beef, making a total of 15,847,3881b. Wellington is third, its total yield of 14,675,9741b being distributed as follows: Mutton, 9,387,9891b; lamb, 907,2221b; beef, 4,380,6651b. Oamaru : export totals, 3,845,8291b, including 3,022,6371b mutton, 768,2451b lamb and 54,9471b beef. Porb Chalmers contributed 2,503,6731b mutton and 400,6061b beef, or 2,904,2781b in all. Gisbome sent no less than 2,264,6731bs meat, including 2,208,5091bs mutton and 56,1641bs lamb. Bluff follows with a record of 1,645,2211bs mutton and 1,231,8881bs lamb. Timaru yielded 1,525,1641b5, including 1,205,5001bs mutton and 319,6641bs lamb. Auckland supplied 419,0911 be mutton, 491,1321bs lamb and 59,853 ibs beef.
