CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.
The Caledonian Socieby held a special meeting last evening in the Foresters' Hall, Newton. The chief object of the meeting was, of course*,- the enjoyment of bhe usual singing and dancing. Bub there was also down for discußßion the important question as to whether the Socieby should amalgamabe with the Burns Club. Mr James Robertson, Treasurer, explained on behalf of the Committee that afber careful consideration ib had been decided that bhe wi.esb course bhe-Society could pursue would be to join wibh bhe Burns Club. Ib would look bobber, and ib would be betber bhab bwo organisations having bhe same objects should unite. Union would be sbrengbh. The Caledonian Socieby would nob Bink its identity, bub a large strong society would be formed, to which all " bribher Scots" mighb belong wibhoub feeling bhab bhey were in antaganism to any obher fellow countrymen. Mr Gorratt did nob see any good to be gob from amalgamation. The Caledonian Sooiety was sbrong enough by itself, and he did nob bhink ib should sink ibself in bhe Burns Club, though' bhe labter- was the older socieby. After a little further discussion aballot was taken, and resulbed in the proposal for union being rejected by 35 votes bo 21. ______ The programme was then proceeded wibb as follows, Mr Anderson being in bhe chair:—Miss Fortzer, piano selection ; Mr James Sbewarb, junr., song; Mr and Misa Maraon, comic duet; Miss Grindrod, recitation, " Lifeboab ;" Mr Parrish, song-, Messrs Johnston and Simpson, sail_r_ hornpipe (in character); Mrs Anderson, recibabion ; Mr Philips, piano selection ; Mrs Anderson and Miss Gardiner, dialogue ;Mr Goldwaber, comic song; Miss Shepherd, song. . After " AuldLang Syne the usual dance was held, the music being supplied by Miss Fortzer and Mr Goldwater (piano) and Mr Ness (violin). The Chairman intimated that Mr Nosa would preside at the next meeting.
