MINING NEWS.

Thames, this day. City of Dunedin.—ln driving hillwards, the outcrop of the reef has been traced for over 100 feet, and tho prospects are the same as in the drive. Good gold is obtained by pounding the stone. The Caledonian Goldmining Company battery, which -was recently .purchased by Mr E. Kersey Cooper on behalf of the London syndicate owning the Fame and Fortune "mine, has recently undergone considerable alterations and improvements, which were finished at noon yesterday, when the formal opening took place in the presence of a number of gentlemen, interested in mining. The whole plant has been completely overhauled, building having been enlarged, a specimen stamper j erected, two new stamper boxes pub in, s new tables and blanket streaks provided, while new paddles have also been constructed. The battery now consists of 21 head of stampers and 16 berdans, and is in splendid order, being one of the most efficients plants on the field. Water is used as motive power, and when the stamps were set in motion everybing was found to work as smoothly and satisfactorily as could' be desired. Ab presenb there are about 80 loads of quartz awaiting treatmenb at the battery, and should the roads be kept in good order Mr Cooper expects to keep the plant going continuously,
