Philip Turner was charged at the R.M, Court this afternoon with having intended to desert his wife and three children. Mr E. Cooper appeared for the cpmplainant. After hearing the evidence His Worship, Mr E. S. Wardell, ordered the man to contribute £2 per week, and to find sureties that he would fulfil the order. Mr T. E. Corkill, of the Bank of New Zealand, and the noted pedestrian, has received orders to proceed to Sydney to up a position in the bank there. Mr Corkill has made a lob of friends in Auckland, and his departure will be greatly regretted. To-day the flags of the various coastal vessels in port were flown at half-mast A little girl, one of the children of Captain Farquhar, of the Thames steamer Rotomahana, died last m'ghb, and hence the signs of mourning. The opening dance of the Newton Social Union's season was given last evening in St. George's Hall. There were about forty couples in the hall, and a very pleasant evening wae spent. A programme of 2* dances wich 4 extras waa gone through, the music being supplied by Elliott's string band; MessrsHulme.Martinson, and Hobson were M.C. and performed their duties most efficiently. The party concluded at about 3.30 this morning.
