NEWTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual meeting of the abovo Councj] was held last evening. Present : The Mayor (Mr Ambury), Councillors Riggs, Webley, Cleghorn, Brown, Cox, English, Donald".

The Whau Bridge.— The Surveyor-Gen-eral wrote stating that Dr. Giles, R,M, had been appointed by His Excellency to inquire as to -what local bodies benefited by the Whau Bridge, and if so, to state what proportion of the cost of maintenance should be paid by such bodies.—Tho letter was received and referred to tho Finance Committee with power to act. Assistant Poundiceeper.—-A letter was received from F. H. Creamer, assistant pouudkeeper, resigning his position.—This was accepted. Dead Dogs.— Mr M. Casey wrote complaining that people were drowning dogs in the creek that runs through Surrey Hills.— The Mayor said he had the carcases removed and buried.—The letter was received, and the Town Clerk was instructed to mention thfs matter to the police authorities. Newton Chkbs Club.—The Secretary of the Newton Chess Club wrote, offering to rent a room in the Council Chambers for the use of the Club, offering £5 per annum as rental.— Cr. Brown moved and Cr. Donald seconded, "That the application be granted." — Cr. Webley opposed the motion, and ?o did Cr. Rigge.—Tho Mayor considered that the rent offered was not sufficient.—Councillor Donald also considered that £5 was not enough. Or. English moved, " That the rent be fixed at £7 10s per annum." This wa? eeconded by the Mayor and agreed to by the Council. Sanitary Matters.—Mr Currie reported that the abattoirs within the borough were in excellent condition. The Mayor testified to the general cleanliness, and asked Councillors to inspect the places. Cox's Creek Bridge. — Cr. Donald mentioned that the above bridge was in a dangerous condition, in consequence of holes in the planking.—Cr. Riggs said that the repairs were required on the city sideof the bridge.—Mr Currie said he had informed the City Engineer.—The Mayor reminded the Council that the City Council had control of the bridge.
