A young lady had a very narrow escape from drowning at the Q.ucen-sfcroet Wharf last night, about nine o'clock. She had gone down with sorao friends to the eteamer Wainui, when she mistook her footing in the dark and stumbled over the edge of the wharf, closo to the steamer's stern. One of those with her, Mr J. Grubb, who has previously rescued several persons from drowning, promptly jumped _in after her, and succeeded in gaining hold of her under tho wharf. Hβ supported her until help wa3 at hand, but it was quite half-an-hour before the two were out of the water. Some of the officers of the Wainui rendered assistance, and the lady and her rescuer were hauled up the side of the steamer in safety. The young lady was almost unconscious, and was taken home in a cab. She is now, however, none the worse For her bath, excepting a rather unploasarit shaking occasioned by the shock of falling. Mr Grnbb deserves credit for the plucky manner in which he supported the girl in the water for half-an-hour before they were got on shore again.
