THE ROWING REGATTA.
BENEFIT TO THE RAROTONGANS,
The rowing events postponed from Friday, slsb ult., owing to the bad weather, were rowed off on Saturday afternoon la?t, the course being from opposite St. George's Rowing Club shed to the Railway \Vharf. The ferry steamer Eagle followed the races, and had a good number of people on boar*!. Hunter's Band performed selections during the afternoon. The proceeds aro to be devoted bo the benefit of the Rarotongrans, who gave an exhibition of diving between the races. Mr J. F. Haultain was starter, and Mr J. M. Brigham referee. Rakotoxoan Canoe Race.—Throe competitors entered for this race, which proved a rather tame affair, Tangaia winning very easily. Maiden Gigs (under lOst). —Six boats started and a good race resulted in a win for North Shore, with Waitemata second, Auckland third. West End was put out by an accident to a ro .vlock. ■ Sculleks' Handicap. — Three started in this event, for which W. Bailey was scratch. C. Farquhar was pulling well when he capsized, and what promised to be an interesting finish turned into a walk-homo for Bailey. Farquhar was picked up by one of the whaleboats.
Juniok Gia Race.—Six boabs started for this event. A fine race took place between Waitemata, North Shore, and Poverty Bay, but near the finish the two latter boats fouled and Waitemata was left to win easily. Maiden , Gigs.—This was about the best race of the day between Poverty Bay, West End No. 1, and Ponsonby, very little separating the boats at any time. They finished in the order named.
Senior Waleboat. — Waitemata and West End were tho only startere and the champions won easily enough, though We3t End pulled very well.
Bona Fide Amateurs.—Three crows started and a fine race took place between West End, Auckland and St. George's crews, tho first named winning.
