RACES AT FORBURY.

e# DI N EXHIBITION MEETING. I SATURDAY'S RACING. I NOTES , ON THE MEETING. ' (IV TEUGEAfH. -FROM " HIPI'ONA.") My- ■ DuNedin, this day. I ; my connection with racing never ■assigted at a race meeting where ivierse circumstances as those preJiithe second day of the Exhibition :• A perfect gale was blowing, jtoeceesitated those presents ever On the alert for their "tiles; to make matters worse, dust from lining sandhills almost blinded one, fe one sigh for the climate of the North. Tirailleur s Canterbury Derby and Cup victories entai oa on him a seven pound penalty, but "us out not stop him from, going to the post fn f-.- IJ°Viavourite1 J °V iavourite - The confidence was justit.ed by tho colt winning easily, but, «T l K ui ■ slu SSish nature and the terrible wind blowing across the course, he had bo be touched up with the spurs. Sultan ran up po his best form, bub Scots Grey finished L-μ m rean Mr Sfcead supplied me with the times the several distances wore run in as follows :—Two furlongs, 272 sec : half-a-mile, ; three • quarter mile, i-nan <a£sec; one mile, lmin 47isec ; the mile and quarter being compassed in 2min 15sec. Whan TirailTeur turned to the weighing enclosure there was a great demonstration against him, and repeated groans went up for him, intermingled with some oaths. The sudden scratching of Tirailleur for the Exhibition Cup has made Mr Gollan unpopular among the public. With regard to Tirailleur 1 may say he has no end of good points, but is very ragged - hipped. Despite this he covere a lot of ground when "extended, and Corunna will have to be wound up to concert pitch to put him down in the Greab Northern Derby. As predicted, Occident won the President's Handicap in easy fashion, but what delighbed Aucklanders was to witness Lady Florin triumph in the Spring Handicap, and Francobte the son of IVlusket and L'Orient's triumph over Foresber in bhe Musaelburgh Plate. His owner, Mr tells me Francobbe is the fastest horse over five furlongs bhey have ever had in their stable. Pygmalion gob a very bad starb in the Criterion Stakes, and was never able to get up bo Tempest, who is by New Holland out of Tornado. So far, bhe meeting has been noticeable for bhe success of the local stable, Messrs Stephenson and Hax.ietb, and bheir trainer, Stuart Waddell, has come in for no end of praise for the condition of his horses. The tobalisator arrangements were a<rain perfecr, bub some of the sbarts were very bad, while the races were delayed considerably after advertised time owing to the disagreeable weather. The attendance was nob up to what it should have beijn. During the afternoon the stewards con sidered a complaint by the starter, MiDriver, with respect to Derritb's riding of Corolla in the Two-year-old Selling Race on Cup Day. This horse, which went out fiist favourite, was left at the post, and the starter was of opinion that Derritb was to blamo for nob getting away. Against this ib was proved that Corolla was lazy in her work and difficult to start, and the stewards decided to give Derritb the benefit of the doubb. The Conference of racing delegates takes place on Monday night. Mr L. D. Nabhau will represent the Auckland Racing' Club, owing to the Hon. E. Mitchelso'i being compelled bo leave for Riverbon. During bhe day attention was called to a number of spoolers outside the paddock who were cash betting, and bad encased round their hats printed cards with words " Members of Auckland Tatttasall's" iu,«cribed thereon. Mr John Marshall interviewed the stewards, md means were taken to pub a abop to ib Mr Gollan was asked to pub a price on Tirailleur, for an Australian buyer, bub refused the overbure. Tho following is a debailed accounb of bhe racing:— President's Handicap of 600sovs. One mile and a-half. Second horse, lOOsovs ; third horse, 50sovs. Mr J. Sbephenson's b h Ocoidenb, by Lapidist — The West, Bsb 51b (\V. White) 1 Hon. G. McLean's b h St. James, 7st 3ib (VV. Buddicombe) ... 2 Mr Hobba's bg Quibble, 6stlolb(Cusden) 3 Recluse (7eb 121b), British Lion (7sb slb>, Alsace (7st), Masthead {6sfc 121b) also starbed. They were senb away bo a fair Rtarb, of which Occidenb had raiher the best, and British Lion the worst. Alsace was taken at once to the front, with St. James second, Recluse and British Lion laab. Passing bhe eband bhe tirsb time Alsace was btiil in the van, then came St. James ahead* in fronb of Quibble, with Occidenb fifth, almost pulling White out of the saddle. After two thirds of the distance had been traversed Alsace wae first, ieading St. James and Occidenb, who moo running side by side, the rest bunched together. Alsace had now shob her bolb, and Recluse was seen to make a forward move and ab the bend looked dangerous; bub once well in the sbraighu ib was bfeen fchab the race watt confined bo the local representatives, and a line e\hibition of riding was given on tho part of both jockeys — Occident, whom White had ridden cleverly, eventually winning by a shorb length. Quibble was bhird, aboub three lengths olt; then came Recluse, British Lion, and Alsace last. Time, 2min 40£scc, which is a capital performance when one takes into consideration the gale that was blowing. Dividends, £1 15s 6d on both machines.

Morrame was taken bo the front, with Lady Mab next, and Pygmalion handy. Rounding the turn all were well together, save Koseleat, who wa3 never in it. Coming into the straight Pygmalion made his efiort, bub the weight proved r.oo much and he dropped back. Up the straight a fine race took place between Morraine, Tempest and Lady Mab. the whipa . being out. Tempest la'ibed the longest, and won comfortably by aboub a length. Time, lmin 4isec. Scots Grey (Derritfc) also fan. The foulwere despatched to a fair start, Oynisca showing in front, with Scots Grey, Tirail* leur and Sultan well together. As they naSSOd the 6tand Soofca Grey was in front with tiralieur only a neck behind, the other two being a length aW.ay. At the half-mile post, Sultan and Scots Grey el6sed up and as they rounded the Corner all were well together. At the turn into the straight Scots Grey had the advantage, and as Thompson had to ride Tirailleur it) was thought he was done, but the horse only wanted shaking up, and once in the straight he took the lead Sultan passing Scots Grey. A good race home folKed but Tirailleur had all the best of it and won by nearly two lengths without beinedistressed. The win was not popular, boW received With hooting, which was renswfd When the horse was taken to the weSngenclosure, where for a few seconds rJfriS of counter demonstrations f took plaSot cheering and booting. *»»£»» 15seo. The three in the van ran locked along the back of the course. Ab tho turn Ruby improved his position, and turning for home joined the leaders.
