SINGULAR ACCIDENT.
A MIDDLE FINGER LOST.
A severe accident happened yesterday* afternoon to a young man named W. J., Evers, well known in aquatic circles in Auckland. Mr Evers is a member of the. City Rowing .Club, and an enthusiastic worker for the Club's advantage. The old platform at the Club's shed was destroyed by a gale some time ago, and a new one is being erected for this season. Mr Evers was down yesterday afternoon, assisting ab the work in company with some other members of the Club. The strong wind blowing during the day had shifted two of the upright piles, connected by a cross-piece, on which the platform was being built, and these were out of place. Mr White and one or two of the others present had fastenod a rope to the crosspiece to pull ib back into posibion, and Mr Evers also was working as hard as he could, to shove it along, when by some means one end suddenly slewed round, jammed his hand sharply against the stonework from which the platform led, and before anyone knew what had happened the middle finger of the right hand was off. The cut was a very clean one, and must have been done by an oyster-shell or piece of glass fastened to the stones. The finger was taken off between the second and third joints, but above the cut the bone is injured, and Dr. Davy, who attended the sufferer, thinks amputation may be necessary. Search was made at the time for the missing.parb of the finger, but ib could nob be found. Mr Evers is a clerk, and the loss of his finger will interfere greatly with his work for some time. He had also been looking forward to active work with his club, having been picked for their approaching races, but will now have to be content with looking on for some time.
