DEATH OF MR BAGNALL.

Thames, this day. Mr Geo, Bagnall died at Turua last evening. The deceased was an old colonist and firsb settled at Matakana, but some years ago he returned to bhe Thames wibh his wife and family and eventually became in conjunction with his sons proprietor of tbe Turua sawmill and bushes. Deceased leaved a wife and five sons and three daughters to mourn their loss. Mr George Bagnall, wbo died at his residence, Turua, Thames River, lasfc night, was an old and highly esteemed settler of this province. Mr Bagnall was a native of Prince Edward Island, Dominion of Canada, and came to this colony about 25 years ago. During his residecne in his- native province he was an enterprising and influential colonist, and for several years and until he left home was a member of the Legislative Council. During his political life he was one of fche firsb advocates of free education for the people, and b>y him and his associates free education was given to the children of Prince Edward Island about thirtyseven years ago, thus making that little colony the first; English possession to provide free education. Mr Bagnall was a descendant of an early settler to America, his ancestor having emigrated to New Zealand early in the seventeenth century, during the Revolutionary War, 1776 to 1783., His father and grandfather being staunch Loyalists became refugees and settled in Prince Edward Island. His sons are the sole proprietors of the Hauraki Saw Mill Company.
