BISHOPRIC OF SYDNEY.
London, August 8.
The " Record " states that the bishopric of Sydney has been offered to the Rev. Canon Saumarez Smith, and that he has accepted the position.
The B*v. William Saumarez Smith, who was one of the three clergymen nominated by the late Anglican Synod for the Primacy, isat present Principal of St. Aidan'sCollege, Birke'.ihead, having been appointed to thab' position in 1869. He was a scholar of TriDity College, Cambridge ; was formerly chaplain to the Bishop of Madras, and was exfiininingchaplain tothe Bishop of Norwich in 1869. In 1880 he became an honorary canon of Chester Cathedral. Canon Saumerez Smith is the author of " Obstacles to Missionary Success " (Maitland prize essay for 1867*; "Christian Faith," being a course of, live sermons preached before the University of Cambridge in 1869; and " Lessons oa the Book of Genesis," published in 1879.
