News was received in the city of Mexico, May 7th, of the discovery of the remains of a large city, heretofore hidden in the depths of a dense forest, near the ruins of Palenque, in the State of Chiapas. • Buildings five storyes high are said to be in a fair state of preservation, and a well-paved road, several miles long, is traceable in the trojrical undergrowth. The report comes from good sources.

From Colon (Aspinwall) on the Isthmus quiet ia reported, and the city almost deserted. 1,500 labourers left on May 10th for Jamaica, free transportation being furnished by the British Consul. On the 7th, all work on trJe Canal having ceased, it reverted to the Colombian Government. An immense amount of valuable machinery lies exposed and is being rapidly deteriorated by the weather. A treaty of peace is said to have been projected by Legitime of Hayti, in which the Island of Gonaives, also a coaling station, were ceded to France, and French capitalists are given special privileges on condition that France assists the Hay tien Government in suppressing the rebellion and accords a subsidy of five millions and a half of francs, with two warships, first class, with arms and equipment. The Anglo-Spanish Steamship Company will soon establish a abeam line between Valparaiso, Callao, and Panama, which will also connect wibh San' Francisco and British Columbia, competing with the Pacific Mail Steamship Company, and connecting at the last-named place with the Canadian-Pacific road.

Law, sailed from San Francisco, at date, takes a cargo of wheat to Sydney, valued ab $65,204, consisting of 48,299 centals. May 21.—German barque, Johann Kepler, Captain Van Oppen, sailed from San Francisco for Melbourne at date, carrying 348.655 ft. of lumber and 174,312 ft. of door stock, valued at $23,031. May 28.—Swedish bark Ida, loads lumber on Puget Sound for Melbourne ; barquentine John Smith, lumber, ab Port Blakely for Launceston ; British iron steamer Rockton loads merchandise and barley at San Francisco for Australia, —port not mentioned.
