MARRIED WOMAN AS SCHOOL TEACHERS.

A CHRISTCHURCH OPINION.

(BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

Christchurch, this day.

"A Parent," writing to one of tha Christchurch papers on the subject ol married ladies'being employed as teachers, says : I am led to understand that some or the Boards of this colony have fo lowed the plan of the London Boards ot, Britain in refusing to sanction such, a custom. Common decency says amen to such a plan, but throughout lNorth Cam. terbury the rule seemed to be for lady; teachers when they get married to, remain in their situations. JNow l canj understand the propriety of widows wh£ hold certificates or of ladies whose husbancware incurable invalids being appointerj to such a position, but _ for wive>. of gentlemen who receive larg^ salaries as teachers or who occupy; good positions in commercial houses to continue, is beyond my com-, prehension. In and around the city ot Christchurch there is, I om informed,; scarcely a school in which, married; ladies whose husbands hold important, professional and other positions are. not to be found. Is this right? Is it fair to ; many youn-** ladies who are yearly .passing out of the college or finishing their apprentice--ship as pupil teachers? It is to be hoped that! those school committees who have such petsons in their employ will take steps to r** medy this evil, for such it really is.
