DEATH OF DR. TENNENT.
After a lengthy illness Dr. Charles Emmcrson Tennent passed away aboub ten o'clock this morning at his residence in Symondssbreeb. The deceased was the eldesb son of the labe Henry Tennent, Esq., of Demerra, and nephew of the later Sir James Emmerson Tennent, Governor of Ceylon. He served as surgeon in the Anglo-Chinese Field Force, and received the war medal. He was subsequently Surgeon-Superinten-dent of the Government Immigration Socieby ■ab Park-sbreeb, Westminster ; surgeon of the West India and Pacific Mail Steamship Company ; medical officer of the Seamen's Hospital, and surgeon to the National Steam Navigation Company. Dr. Tennenb also served in India during the Mutiny, and was present ab bobh Delhi and Lucknow. Here he had his left elbow shattered. For his services on this occasion he received the Indian medal wibh clasps. He also served bhroughout bhe Chinese war in 1857 when he was shot through both his'legs, and was invalided home to Europe the following year. For these services he was awarded the medal and Canton clasp. Dr. Tennent was also present ab bhe firsb Burmese rebellion, took part in the capture of Pe^u, was present ab the capture of Bushire, and bombardment of Eushaunef in the Persian Gulf. When he retired he came to ]\ew Zealand in 1875, and lived for some years in Hawke's Bay, where he was appointed assistant surgeon to the F Battery of New Zealand Artillery. He removed to Auckland in 1879, and was transferred to the A Battery and promoted to the rank of staff surgeon. He was also a member of the Masonic Order, being a Mark Mason. The deceased's jovial manner had made him many friends in this city,who ..ill lamenb his decease.
Ib has been decided to accord the veteran soldier a military funeral, which will mosb probably take place at 2 o'clock to-morrow. The interment will be ab the new Anglican cemetery at Sb. John's, Tamaki.
Deceased leaves a widow and adult family of one son and three daughters. •
