Melbourne, Thursday.

The feature of the afternoon's sport was the phenomenal performance-of the New ml * bred horses. Lochiel and Carbine, ihe former won the Autumn Handicap in a hand canter, comparatively speaking, the last mile and a half being traversed in ™ 39sec. Carbine was made a very pronounced favourite for the Champion Stakes, even money being taken at the finish. Utfrien rode very patiently, and coming I]°J ne afc a tremendous bat from the Abattoirs, fairly smothered Abercorn amidst deafening cheers. The race was very slow abthe start, but the last mile and a-half was cut out in 2min 37£ see, Carbine being tour lengths better than that, as he was that distance behind Abercorn, who was leading, when the time was struck. .Results :—

From a slow start Cyclops gob away -with tho lead, but passing the stand Carbine rushed bo the fronb, keeping command until the abattoirs were readied, when Abercorn ran out in advance, maintaining his advantage round to the river, being in the straight a length in advance of Cyclops; Carbine, well in hand, eight lengths away. Approaching the scraping sheds Carbine made a forward move,_ bub Abercorn still maintained the lead into the straight, Ab the distance, however, Carbine collared Aborcorn, and a sharp and decisive struggle resulted in a victory for the Musket colt, who ran home an easy winner by two lengths ; Melos four lengths behind Abercorn, followed by Cyclops, Volley, and Lonsdale. The Nursery Handicap ot 300sovs. fell to Mr J. O'Longhlaa's colt Richelieu, Chintz second, and Dreadnought third, and the Special Juvenile Stakes was won by the Hon. J. White's Sinecure, Rudolph being second, and Melton third. Chatwynd appropriated the Free Handicap from Plutarch and Retort, and among the other starters were Pearl Shell and Whakawai.
