SHOP-LIFTING.

Betwiskn 5 and 6 o'clock yesterday afternoon (i man named Charles Harris was observed to take a pair of trousers from the doorway of Mr F. J. Bennett's shop, Queenstreet. Ha dropped them into a sack and quietly threw them on the top of a cart which waa standing at hand. Mr Bennett's attention was drawn to the mattor, and the man waa soon accommodated with lodgings in tho look-up. Upon hi.s baij being examined, Mr Bennett identified tho trousers as his property. It also contained a now pair of boots-. Acting Detective Herbert subsequently learned that these were tho property oi Mr William White.

Charles Harris appeared at the Police Court this morning, before Dr. Giles, 11. M., when ho pleaded guilty to tho charge of having stolen the trousers, and was Hentencod to three months' imprisonment with hard labour. Ho waa then charged with steulinsr the boots. To * this he pleaded not guilty, alleging that the boots were inside the sack when he found ifc.

On the application of Inspector Broham this case was remanded until to-morrow.
