ALLEGED SLANDER.

(by telegraph—press association.)

Wellington, this day. Another insurance libel case began this morning. Mr C. Hickey, canvasser, formerly of Auckland and the Thames, cued Mr D. M. Luckie, Commissioner of the Government Insurance Association, for £600 damages for accusing him of appropriating a promissory note given by one Hogg in payment of premiums, and threatening to put the matter in the hands of the police if the money was not paid. The defence is a general denial. Plaintiff, in his evidence, said it was against the instructions of the Department to take promissory notes, and to accelerate the transaction with Hogg, he agreed to pay the latber's premium himself if Hogg gave him a promissory noise. It was a purely private matter between them.
