(WLOM OTTU OWK CORRESPONDENT.)

Lojtdon, December 1

Sixes I last wrote the New Zealand Foot ball Team have won matches at again** Cumberland Countf, at Carlisl e against Carlisle, ab Hawick against Hawick, at Carlisle against East Cumberland, at K.endal againsb Westmoreland, and at Liverpool against Liverpool. At S win ton they were defeated. The following are details :—■ THE MAORIS IN CUMBERLAND. | From Newcastle tbo N.Z. football team journeyed westward to Carlisle, which city was their headquarters whilst in Cumber- j Jand. The tirsc match in this county was played on Saturday week at Maryport, the iteoiria meeting and dofejitiug a fairly j Btrong CuGivby Team by 2 goals and 4 tries to 2 trie 3. I received the following personal notes from my correspondent with thp NewZecslantiei-s. 'Wetookthe train down j to AJaryiMrt, after lunch, on Saturday last, and arrived just in time to put on our lootball togs and commence play. There was fipt a minute to spare, which was rather unfortunate, a3 we thoulti have iiked to have a look round the place. The team Warbrick selected for this occasion was a comparatively weak one. Lea, A. Warbrick, Elliott, and MeCauslund standing out on account of severe coidd. The attendance, though only numbering about 3,00U, was, 1 was informed by a' local sport, the largest ever seeu in Cumberland. Our opponents, despite a strong wind agaitist them, were the lirst to acorn No goal, however, resulted from their try. Our " boys" then woke up, and almost immediately Keogu wot over the line. Williams took the place kick, and nearly managed to convert. Shortly after, Ellison put in one of bio capital runs and secuied a second try, but Williams failed in his attempt at goal. Taiaroa was the next to get over the line, but was pushed back into the n'eld of pl«y before the umpires and referee could get" up to him. Thus we lost a third try, although Taiaroa had fairiy grounded the ball over the line, .lust before half-time the Cumberlanders secured theiv second try, but again failed to register the major' point. On resuming, our opponents, witli the wind now in their favour, ut once began to press, and kept us very busy frustrating their eiiorts to score. Alter tome very hard work in our territory, wo carried the bull to midiield. Here Madig&ii intercepting a pass to the opposing right \\rag threequarter, put on a gvand run and secured another try, touching down behind our opponents* , goal posts. The kick yr&s successfully taken by Fied Warbrick. Our ' boys' now became tne aggressors, and quickly auded a coupio of trie 3, Keogh being responsible for one and | Ellisou securing the other. "Pat's" try ■was obtained near the touch-in-goal flag, and consequently the kick was a very difficult one and failed. Ellison's try was obtained right between the posts, and ought to have been converted, but somehow ov other Williams failed. Tue game ended leaving us easy victors by - goals and 4 fciieo ta 2 tries;r< 'i ? b© team were entertained at dinner by the local club, and at 7.20 p.m. left Mary'port for Cuilwle. Cumberland kicked off at 3.30 against a strong wind, which completely dealroyed the ett'ect of the kick and brought the ball at ouce iuto touch. From ihti throw oiit some fast play followed in the centre of the field. Shortly afterwards the ball was worked down toward the Cumberland goal line, but somo splendid passing among the Cumberland men took place, and the ball was carried against the wind towards the opposite end. Shortly afterwards, about the centre of the tield Cumberland obtained a free kick for on"-*ide play, and -Murehio and Sutton eflected some neat f.as=iiig, but little ground was gained. The ball subsequently ■went toward the Cumberland goal posts, when Selkirk relieved by a good kick which went into touch. After this, from the centre of the field, Selkirk got possession of the ball and by a splendid run in secured a try. The place kick was taken by Lowthwaite, bub the wind \va.s tou strong, and he failed to place a goal. From the kick out with the aid of the wind the bull was quickly transfeired towards the Cumberland goal lirie.und some tough play took place in front of the poits. Keogk obtained a try and Williams, taking the kick sent the ball high over the bar amid the applause of tho spectators, 'the 'kick of! by Cumberland drove the ball almost to the visitors' posts, but with the aid of the wind it was quickly returned into Cumberland territory. The home team quickly relieved the pressure, and a little later a splendid run ■by Smith transferred the bail to a little beyond the centre Jlag, where he was unfortunately sent over the touch line. One of the Maoris then made hie murk but nothing wasjjaihed by the kick, the ball being simply transferred to the other side or the liuld. A run by Keogh nearly secured auother try, but he was collai-o.t and brought ■down by Lee, and the ball was dribbled out of danger. Taiaroa by a run secured a try, but the place kick by Williams did not improve tho score. "Within a few minutes another try was claimed by the Maoris, but was disallowed, -atid : the ; ball scrimmaged, live y.;irds from the lino. A j'ree kick by Cumberland sent. the bull tc the , centre, where Stamper, getting .possession, made a capital run and scored another try, but Lowthwaite failed to improve it. Ti.o ball was again set in motion, ixud for some limb play was confined to the cent.v of tUβ lieid, where the visitors obtained a, free kick lot , off-skle play. The kick v.as well charged down, ljut a smart kick by one of the vjsitois made up for the lo*s. For bOnie time play continued even, and Cumberland obtained"a fr«e kick near the visitors "Uo " iiag, but the Mt±o<is sharply truueferred t:?e bail towards the opposite fend, and when half-time was called tbo score was : Maoris, 1 goal and 1 try : Cumberland, 2 ts'iss. in the second half Cuuiberlaucl had the wind in their favour,.and from the.capital display they had mude-in the ii/>l iuth it vy«id generally thought tjfasit with thw-'.tuivan-tage of the wind they would be a mutch ior tha strangers. This idea,.however, was far horn correct. The: visitors adopted clilleront tactics to their opponents in p'uyiug-against the strong •witKA. Qu very rare uccasione did they aifconipu long kicks, and eoniiued theiritttentioumoretodribbiuigand passing. Frouu the kick-of the ball wtusnicelyreturned. gtjd, .vit-h the aid ot the wind, waa ew-ily wansfen od to within the strangers' twentyfive, where Marchia made a nice puss tj a forward, who passed to Sut-on, and Sutton to Dove, who made v good attempt at goal from a drop, the' bail padding just outside the post, and oaly a minor was obtained. Another minor followed quickly, after which the play settled down ia the centre, and for some time vrus remarkably fast and iairly even. Some f-ixlendid passing by the Maoris (which was luudly cheered by the spectators), R^*« them greai; advantage, and & try wa--. • !•■" i'-sd near the touchlitie. The place Wit- iilncult one, and Williams failed U> *c it. Shortly after the kick out bij o°t possession, and after a mafru' "n planted the bail in a fair!- -iiioit. Williams again took t.!- ..oittly kicked a goal. Ou re-, ■■i, uuide another goad droj? bat; Jμ', . a goal, and from tiiie 1

time the vistfeort pYeeeed the borne team very hard, Wynyard, by a fast nw, secured tho next try. and ehortly afterwards EllUou registered another.
