ATHLETICS.
Level time for the 100 yards has at length been lowered and the record established on reliable authority. At the Amateur Athletic Games' held at St. Louis, U. S., on the 10th of September last, Schiflerstein, of San Francisco, did the trick. The following is the account from a St. Louis print: —The feature of the day was the performance of Schifferstein, the Californian, _ in the 100-yard race. He won away off in the world's record time of 0: 9 4-5. The amateur record is 10 seconds, and the Californian lowered this. The professional record of 0 : 9 4-5 is held by H..M. Johnson, who was one of the timers yesterday. The .performance will go on record, and Schifferitein will receive a handsome medal for lowering the record. There can be no doubt of the performance, as he beat Joe Murphy, who is a 0 :10^ man, three yards. Id the first heat the starters were: Joseph A. Murphy of the M.A.A.C, Emil Reder of the same club, and T, McCarthy of Chicago. Murphy took the lead at the start and won with something in hand by sir inches ofi McCarthy. Time, 0:10 4-5. In the second huat Schifferstein, O. J. Faith and George M. Huchs of the M.A.A.C. ■ami Eli Thornish of Chicago competed. Schifferstein raced away from his field in the first fifty yards and won easily by four yards off Thornish, second. Time, 0:13 1-5. Thb Californian has the easiest of styles. He much resembles Sherrill, the champion, in hi-j stylo of movement, and does not seem to exert himself a bit when in motion. Hoiwill win the national championship. In the final heat a good start was effected, but Schifferstein opened up a big gap on his field in the first fifty yards as before. Mulphy then held him even, but could not gaia an inch, and the Californian won by three yards, in the record time of 0 : 9 4-5.
