In an article on the fact of the AttorneyGeneral residing in Auckland dur-_. ing the recess, the ''Evening Press" admits that when Sir F. Wbitaker ' joined tho Ministry it was made a condition he should live away from the seat_ of . Government, but says it was a very improper condition, and contends that Sir . Harry Atkinson was no more justified in making it than he would have been - in making a promise that one of . his colleagues might hold a portfolio and draw the emoluments of office while residing in Australia or England. Ifc admits that there would be no ground of > complaint if the Attorney-General were .not) ' paid, bub contends that as he receives , £1,000 a-year without performing any . duties for it, the public have just ground of complaint, no matter whether his colleagues are satisfied with the arrangement or nob.
COMPARATIVE PORT CHARGES. ' The owners of the barque Kentish Las 9 - have furnished the " Post" with the following suggestive particulars of the cost of visiting5 the ports of Dunedin and Welling* ton respectively. The visit to Dunedin was with timber from Kaipara, and that to Wellington with timber from the Bay of Islands. The expenses in Dunedin were £53 3s 7d. Tho total Wellington charges f. were £4 17s 3d, or £48 6s 2d less than in ' Dunedin.
