NAUTICAL EXAMINATIONS.

(BY telegraph. — own correspondent.)

Wellington, this day. The Marine Department have received a communication from the Victoria Steam Navigation Board stating that its rules wibh reference to service as second and, third mates are identical -with the NewZealand regulation on the subject, which refuses to recognise service as second pr third mate in the coasting trade as officers' service for the purpose of enabling persons to be examined for certificate as first mate or master ordinary. The Marine Department, however, recognising that this rule entails considerable hardship upon many persons, is bringing the matter under tha notice of the Board of Trade, with bhe view of ascertaining if it cannot be altered so as to allow of the recognition of the coastal service as second or third mate, for the purpose of enabling persons to be examined as first mate and master ordin* ary.
