Mr Mays read a letter received from the Hon; Minister; of Public Work's, as follows: •—. "I need hardly remind the' Council that the grant of £500 made by the Government to your county was given for the purpose of providing work for tlje Auckland unemployed upon roads ih the Waitakerei district, and that no portion of bhis grant should be Used for the purpose of compensation. I may further add that a vote of £6000 is available for the purpose of road making in the vicinity of village .ettlemonts for'the purpose of providing work for thevillagesettlers. (Signed) E.MITCH-.L-SON."' ' '; '- ' ' ■

The Chairman explained that no money had been _**pended for compensation, iior was it intended to do so. ■ Mr Mays thought that it was- possible to get some grant in aid of making roads, near the Swanson Village Settlement. Tho Governmenb, ho thought, would be willing to grant money to, County Court-; oils who wouldemploy bheir own engineers and staff to carry out the work. It would be o much cheaper Way of carrying through the work. * '■'' :

After some discussion it was decided "to apply for £300 to be granted out of tho Village Settlement funds,': the,'work to be done by tho village settlors under -the supervision of the County Engineer.
