ATTACK ON SUAKIM.

TpE rebels in large,jnumbers massed at Handoub, and last night they- made a determined attempt to obtain possession of the causeway connecting ; this place with .the mainlahcl. A detachment: of Egyptian soldiers and friendlies^ who went bdfc to oppose the invading forces were overpowered;* by the rebels and driven back to ,tlie town. The rebels might.,. have follovyed ...up this advantage, and thus, placed the safety of the town in jeopardy, but for the timely assistance of the British gup-boat in harbour, which shelled the rebel position, and forced them to beat a hasty retreat. The rebels suffered heavy loss in skirmish and from, sheila from the steamer. Tlie gunboat subsequently landed a force of marines to assist in defending the to#n.
