Assault.—Jamss Campbell was charged with having assaulted one August Juuua Carleen on the 18th September.—He pleaded guilty.—Auguat Julius Carlsen deposed that he was a Swede. Ho, went in company with some deteotiyea to search a boat owned by a man named John Dinan. The prisoner also wanted to go on the boat, and upon being told that he must not, he struggled violently with Sergt. Clarke and they were compelled to handcuff him and bring him to the station!. By the;prisoner :sThey had no authority to search the boat.-—Constable Mackay deposed to* going; oil board to search/the yacht. He saw the prisoner struggling oq the ground. The mah J was very violent, struggling and kicking: violently. —-The prisoner accused the witness of twisting his arms behind him and kicking him in the back with his knees, until the bystanders said that it was shameful.—Detective McGrrath deposed to witnessing.the occurrence. The accused was violent aria straggled with Sergeant Clarke and hkd to be handcuffed. —By the prisoner: Witness' did ask the police to let the man up and give hima chance to walk. He became violent again and they had to Handcuff him. — The. prisoner stated t thai ■ the police had called him a thief and ft scoundrel, and used very bad language. He was illtreatediby the Police until Detective McGrath interfered and asked them to give him a chance und let him walk. He /was thrown down.on his face and handcuffed and they jumped on his back.—The. Bench considered that the charge was fully n proved, but as he might' have thought that the police were perhaps taking- unwarrantable liberties by. going on board .the boat of which he was in charge, I the prisoner would only ,be fined £2 and ■ costs or 14 days in defaulti. —The same prisoner was further charged with entering a dwelling-house at River-, head and taking therefrom £12 10s wortli of gum.
