The Colonial Secretary, Wellington, hag orwarded to His Worship the Mayor a bronze rhedal abd ytVo certificates' sent over, by y, the Royal Humane Society of Australasia in recognition of.-.;services rendered byy Auoklanders in saving life. The bronze me^dal is for Constable Luke McDonnell, of the water police, who on the. :31st May,, 1887, saved from drowning a man named .John = Briggs, who fell over..-the Queen-street Wharf. A ceitifici.te of. merit is presented to , William Smith for saving the life of ' ; Mrs Hardy,: , who, ib., d will be . remerbbered, \vas nearly drowned alongside the ' Queen-street Wharf.. She was in a cab which was. backed over the wharf ;at o the -jetty, alongside which the Rotomahana was lying. The other; certificate is presented to Thos. Scarrott,, who saved, the life of Joseph Young and NorahTuohy in Auckland Harbour, oh November 6th, 1886. They went Out in a ; dingy, which capsized, Scarrott succeeded in rescuing them in a flab-bottomed boat with only.one paddle. Thomas Nestoni David Carbmill, Thomas Scarrott, William Collins j Thomas Edward Toneycliffe, Charles Thornton Stewart, Frederick"; Charles Smythy"man, Charles Grey, and James Cannon, ' A": stilly more noble list; is that of, the, names of those wbo, during 1887 and, 1888, , lost ..their lives .while, endeavouring to save the lives of others.
