SUNDAY-SCHOOL UNION EXAMINATION.

LIST OF SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATF^.

The prizes won at the recent Scripture ex amination of scholars; belonging to th e Auckland S|pday - school Union were presented to successful competitors at a large gathering in St. James's Hall, Wel-lingtpn-sbreet, last, evening. The hall was filled with, a large audience, and pn th^ platform was the Union choir, including about two hundred voices.

Mr Henry Lee occupied the chair, and proceedings were commenced by the singing of ''To the Work.' 1 The Rev. R. F. Macnicol then engaged in prayer. Mr Battley came forward. ■He said that' they were singularly privileged in Having Mr Lee to preside over their meeting. After a long career in connection with Sunday-school work, Young Men's Christian Associations} etc., for the past threescore years and ten, he had come twelve thousand miles to assist in celebrating the centenary of their Congregational friends. (Applause.) Mr Lee was president of the highest office of the EngUeih Sunday-school Union,' ahcj he had been one of its' most prominent workers. (Applause.) Mr Battley added that he felt sure the public of Auckland, and also the) Sunday-schoolteachers and scholars, would heartilywelcomeMriL.ee. (Applause.) Mr Henry Lee then addressed the meeting. He said he felt it a very great honour that he had been invited to preside. It was quite true that for many years ho bad taken an active part in Sunday - school labour. It was somewhere about sixty years ago when he first) entered the Sabbath schools as a teacher (applauso), and excepting for some interval inj whioh/ he; was prevented, by his business as member of. the, House of Camrqons, he had from that tine to this been engaged, more pr less., in Sabbathschool work. He therefore appreciated, in gome degree, the labour in which Sabbath-school teachers were engaged, having had much to do with tie teaching first of infants, then of the upper elasnea, and lastly of men who had beeni under his care for a great number of years. It was not • easy to express how much they owed in England to Sabbath school teaching, and h^ hoped it was so in this colony. He believed it was the foundation ,q( tit!) greatness of England, and he thought that the teaching of the Sabbath school had permeated thrpugh the.whole? population.. In Lancashire, from where he (Mr Lee) ca.me, there would be fou,nd, levy children not connected with the i3ab.bath school. He could look forward among people in his own employ, "'and rincTamongst them a very large proportion of Sabbath-school scholars and teachers at tl^e present day. ' Th£y had been trained to habits of usefulness, to habits of attending public worship, and wherever people were found to neglect public worship we mighlj be sure that they commenced by neglecting the Sabbath school. To the young people he would say, do not negltcfc the Sabbath school. (Applause.) He was in Auckland on behalf of the Congregationo,!'Union'of England and Wales, and he owed that position, and, all the positions', in life that he had been called upon to occupy, to the information he'obtained'arid t^e influence brought to bear upon himself in the Sabbath school. (Applause.) He was never ashamed of avowing before everybody that these influences had been the foundation of his success in life. M,r Lp.e then spoke of the assistance given to. the Church by the Sabbath school, and pointed put how desirable, it was for (scholars to rise to teachers and to church members instead of the youqg men'and young women running away whenever tfidy were gfpvyn up. This would be a great spurce of comfort in a.fter life, and w<suld enable them to live for^the benefit oi" others, as! we'll' as' to enjoy life. It was said in Scripture that "The Lordwas with Joseph, and he was a prosperous nian," because he made his religion respected and wa£ never ashamed at all times and under &\\ circumstances to avow his truest and faith in God. So it must be with them. Ho was present at that meeting, he presumed, for the purpose of giving prizes, which the young people had earned. He was very glad this system of giving prizes had been adopted.' his younger days prizes were _ uot -given for "information gained direct, from the Word of God. Th_ey wore given' only for reading, writing and arithmetic. He, was gla.d tht^fc the Sunday--school TJn|on had a^ppted this, plan, and he hoped that from year to year there wrould be, more, prizes to give, and that, they wquld be! more valuable, . because, of the gr,eat> amount of information that could be obtained from the Word of : God-' Depend upon it, whatever people might aay about that Boot, it contained all that was necessary fa make us wise to salvation. Mr Leethen urged/that the teachers should pot ; be; discouraged if progress niiadei by the classes was not so gbpd as, they might I winh, and added that he could give from his own experience, n^any examples, of thjs. Thirty yea^s,'' ago he yiiaite,d America, and had the opportunity of speaking to a great number of Sunday: SQhppl scholars, in I)r. Newton's Church, Philadelphia' There were children frpm five to nine years of age, in the infant cluss, and it was taught by a gentleman who had b.een teaching the pla^s for twentiy-five yeaja. (Applauee.) Thp result w%si that* every quarter, nearly one-fourth of th^se young pppple^ere drafted Mfa 'fyi' 9PMwt» ftR3 almost <?yexy 'one, of then} entered the, church. (ARp.lause..) MrLeeurgedthenepessity for aplpse connection betweeq the ch«rch aad Sabbath school, and, the obtaining frpm the school of qpntinual, addition^ fa the church.' The church should dp its utmost fe? foster thes schpolj and the school would then greatlyassist -and B^n.gth,^ the church^ (Applause.) a Addresses were aleo delivered by the Revs. G. B. Monyo and B. L. T^puias, and Mr Battley explained that the 'third examiner, the Rev. H.C, Garland, was unable to be present in* tophsequencej of having mother engagement/ " * A collection was then taken up and the distribution of prftes follpwedt the awards consisting of hdndsdmeyplumes on appropriate subjects. . , SUCOESSIfUL CANDIDATES.
