PROTECTION- TO CURE THE
DEPRESSION.
• .'.'• Brisbane, this day. The Financial Statement of the Colonial Treasurer has: been laid before Parliament. It shows that the deficit last year was ~£i 90,000, while for the last six years the total deficiency amountsto /600,000. The total debt of the colony is stated to be TheStatementgoeson tosay that the Government regard with disfavour the proposal to impose a land and income tax. They propose to entirely abolish the old tariff, and introduce a new one on the basis of protection* The ad valorem duties will be increased from Tj4 to 15 per cent., and with a view to fostering ihe farming .i industry, the duties on dairy and garden produce will be increased. The Treasurer hopes to be able to show a surplus next year of
