THE SLAUGHTER-HOUSES.
(To the Editor.)
Sib,—Would you gran b me a small space in your - widely-circulated; paper *''for the ' wrong that needs resistance and the'gpod thab we" can do." ■1" luive been waithigl'td see if anyone would, take iip^the'.timel'eport of the slaughter-houses lib^y. If: they;aj'e kept clean, ii 3 they are .nb#, there can"b6 ho bad results from them. It seems a good place for thoiu, as they stand high, and close to the salt water. Meat would ;be dearer and not so good if further away. The;public ought to have thought; whether they would Jike- slaughter-houses: there ov nob before they had gone to somuchexpense. Mr Hellaby has gone to a great expense with building and v purchasing land at a gieat price for the comfort bt his business ; he ha? also a good water supply; he has also put a great number bfvloads of metal on the roads, and gone to a good deal of expense and trouble for the .new road (Cox's Creek), which is to the: benefit of the'public at larger-more especially Ponsonby sideas people can take"a drive, right round, and before they could only go; so far and^ turn back... : , :
:It seems unjust to-,winb to puthimaway nowj as there is no more smelt from it now than from any other gentleman's premises -r-it could not possibly do harm to themosi} refined or delicate. lam a near neighbour, and we axe all in good health. It ought to satisfy, the public when Mr Hellnby • said the nuisance should riot occur ftgain, and as Mr Hellaby i.s a man who bears a high' character amongst his ;workmen, h^ Will1, be a m«in of .his word.
B will be neither loss ;nor gain to us whether the slaufhter-houses are removed or pot, as we are quite independent of each other, but I do not like -to gee my neighbours hurt without any cause, and I* aw quite sure it would be ; and as to the cattle and sheep, .finer could, nob be slaughtered than pass pur place.—l am, etc., A- Near Neighbour.
