Wellington people are exercised _in Jl because of the aurvey which 5 being made to discover a better and cheaper ronte for the North Island Sunk Railway. One otttcome of this feelin* is that Dr. Newman intends to ask the fester for Pnblic Works whether the new !array for the North Island railway now Ling made from Stratford, Intfewood and Minn to Tanmaranui, which the Minister ior Public-Works, in his speech to the Auckland Chamber of Commerce on the 7th April, said would cost £10,000, can be completed for that sttm ; out of what fund will this money be paid; under what authority the expenditure has been incurred, Parliament having decided upon the adoption oi thia central route. ■■'■ ; SHEEP ''DEPARTMENT. Complaints'against the'working of the Sheep Department still continue, and.yielding to the pressure brought to bear on him by various members, the Hon. G. F. Richardsouintends to move next week that a select committee be appointed to inquire into the working of this department, with power to, call for persons and papers, and to sit with any similar committee that may be appointed by the Legislative Council, the committee to consist of Messrs Buchanan, Kerr, Lance, J. McKenzie, Capt. Russell, OCaUaghan, Valentine, Walker, Wilson and the mover. ■

, , LIQUOR PROHIBITION. Mr Fulton^ acting in conjunction with the temperance party 'in the House, has put the following motion on the Order Paper lor Wednesday week; Government, however, having taken private members' days for their business, the motion is very unlikely.to be discussed. It is as follows:— " Whereas the enormous direct expenditure on intoxicating liquors in this colony, amountingannuallytomorethan two millions sterling; contributes largely to the existing depression, adds materially to crime and poverty, and reduces capital available for wprodnctivejndustries, and whereas people under the existing law are powerless to remove the principal cause of these evils, it is, in the opinion of the House, imperative that Government should, without delay, introduce a Bill giving power to people by direct vote at ballot-box, periodically taken, to prohibit the sale of such liquors within the district in which they/reside." Government propose to take Wednesdays from private members1 for their business, and will, also fake .Thursdays after next week. - The Shop Hours Bill standes at the head of, the Order ;PapeE for next private ttetntW day, and the Eight Hours Bill is fourth.

THE; COUNCIL TAKEN TO TASK

A resolution has been passed by the House with the amendment made by t!\e Legislative Council on me Chinese Immigration Bill, and Messrs Ballance, Sedw.Uinness, the Premier, and the Colonial b^J" v y were appointed managers to confer f tb'^.representatives from the Council. i'SWg to the. question, the Hon. It ia considered improbable that any further private members' Bills will get through the lower House thia session unless taken up by the Government. The Premier saya he quite agrees that the sooner the session is wound up the better.

Government decline to devote any money to the purchase of white mulberry seed for distribution, and think quite enough has already been spent in that direction. W. P. Reeves repudiated the hint at reconstruction of the Cabinet attributed to him.

There are upwards of eighty Bills of all kinds on the Order Paper of the House, and half of these are Government measures.

TheMinisterof Works informed the House on Saturday that the last information he had about the Railway Commissiouership was thab they could not get a suitable man under £3,500.

The Minister for Lands considers the way Mr Wachmann, manager of Hopefield station, set about cleaning his infected sheep, relative to which he was fined, reflected great credit on him.
