AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE.

To-day being the 4th of July was the 112 th anniversary of the declaration of independence by the United States, that importannt event having occurred in 1776. The American Consul had the stars and stripes flying over his office, and the Victoria Arcade and several other buildings also flew the American flag, in honour of the day, while the barque Essex, of New York, now in harbour, was decorated with bunting. A number of American citizens arranged to have the Declaration of Independence read iat the Pier Hotel, and ab noon a large ) crowd' assembled there. Morris's band was ;in attendance, and enlivened the pro- • ceedings by playing "Yankee Doodle" and the American national airs. About half-past twelve Mr Sinclair read the declaration to those assembled, the reading ' being greeted with cheers. Some two hundred people dined at the Pier Hotel in honour of the occasion.
