SUPPOSED CAUSE-DISAPPOINTED

LOVE.

The young man found shot dead at Point Resolution, under circumstances already te. iated, has been identified as William McMillan, a young man 25 years of age, born in New Zealand, and a labourer by occupation. "The body has been identified by two sisters, and by a young man named Miller. The mother of deceased and three daughters reside in Charlotte-street, off the New North Road, and there are three brothers resident in the country. The family resided at Hakaru, near Port Albert, until within a few years ago. The deceased had been recently engaged in bush work ab the Upper Thames, and it is supposed that he went across country to Waikato and thence came to Auckland by rail. One of the sisters of deceased was informed byaMrStuartthathe (Stuart)came from Waikato by train on Thursday night last in company with the deceased, but from this point ad trace of his movements had been lost, notwithstanding the most diligent inquiry on the part of the police up till a late hour this afternoon. The deceased had not been in communicabion with his relatives, and they were not aware of his arrival until informed by Mr Stuart. They have only a suspicion as to what may have been, the cause of his rash act, and this points in the direction of disappointed love. The young lady in the case is said to be a Miss Clark or Clarkson, but although the most diligent inquiry has been made she had net been traced up bill the commencement of the inquest. THE INQUEST. An inquest was held at the Pier Hotel, Albert-street, at 2.30 p.m. today, before Dr. Philson (the Coroner) and a jury of six, of whom Mr Daniel Oxley was chosen foreman. Sergeants Gamble and Clark and Constable Hobson were present on behalf of the police. Ernest Hould deposed that be resided at Whangarei. On Sunday, July 1, about 11.30 a.m., he was on Poinb Resolution,Parnell, in company with hisfatherandayounger brother, when he noticed the body of a man in the water at the foot of the cliff. Witness went and told James Conley, the man in charge of the babtery, and then they went down to the water. They found the body to be that of a man. Witness then went and gave information to Consbable Hobson, who is stationed at Parnell. Witness returned with the constable to the beach at the foot of the Fort, The body had then been taken out of ! the water and placed on the bank. Witness saw a bullet wound in the centre of the forehead, and was also present when the body was searched. Some skin had also been knocked off the upper eyelid of the right eye.
