NEWTON.

Tho usual fortnightly meeting of the Newton Borough Council was held last evening. There were present: Crs. Brown, Boyd, Faulder, Webley and Riggs. Mayor.—Mr Ambury made the usual declaration and took his seat as Mayor of the Borough for the first time.

New Councillors. —Messrs Cox (Surrey Ward), English (Sussex Ward) and Laing (Richmond Ward) took their seats as Councillors after making the usual declaration.

The Totalisator.—A circular was read from the City Council of Christchurch, asking the assistance of the Council in obtaining the abolition of the totalisator. A report which accompanied the communication was also read. After some little discussion the letter was received. Lamps.—Councillor Faulder moved the resolution of which ho had given notice at the previous meeting, to the effect that two gas lamps be erected in Surrey Crescent between the great North Road and Richmond Road.—Cr. Webley seconded and several of the councillors spoke to the motion.—Cr. Boyd objected on the score of expense.—The Mayor suggested referring the matter to the Streets Committee.—This was agreed to. —On the motion of the Mayor the Town Clerk was directed to write to the Gas • Company, asking for a reduction of 7_ per cent, in their rates of supply. Bad Drainage.—A complaint had been received ot a drain that went through Wright's property in Richmond Road.— The matter was referred to the Streets Committee with power to act. Committees. —As during the past month the Council had "been almost entirely reconstructed, it was decided to re-appoint the various committees. This was done as follows: —Finance Committee : Crs. Brown and Boyd and the Mayor (Chairman). Streets Committee : Crs. Riggs (Chairman), Cox, English and Laing. Legal Committee : Crs. Faulder (Chairman), Webley and Donald.

CONTRACTS. —The tenders for the supply of the borough metal, scoria and spalls for the ensuing twelve months were opened. They were : Benjamin Berry, metal, Is lOd per cubic yard; spalls, Is 9d ; scoria, 2s 3Jd. M. Casey, rough scoria, 2s 3d ; fine scoria, 2s lOd ; spalls, Is 6d; metal, Is 9d. William Lovetb, rough scoria, Is B£-d ; fine scoria, Is lid ; metal, Is 8d ; spalls, Is 6d. The tender of William Lovett was accepted. Accounts. — Several current accounts were passed for payment.
