ROBBERY AT WAIORONGOMAI

(BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

Te Aroha, this clay. A man named Edward Hickey, single, , living in a two-roomed shanty by himself, J reported to the police last night th -at j £100. in sovereigns and £9 in single1 notes had been stolen from him, the savings of the last four or fiv. * years. Hickey, who is a miner, last saw' the money about 4 p.m. yesterday, when he I left the shanty without locking the door, j On returning in about an hour he found the ; money gone." He kept it in a tin box under I his pillow. There is no trace of the per- • petrator as yet, but the police are investi-1 gating the matter. :

The construction of Thompson's Track, giving direct communication with Te Aroka ■ railway and Waikato, will prove a grea-t convenience publicly, and should enabh? j arrangements for daily mail to be made be- J tween Auckland and Tauranga and East | Coast, via Te Aroha; or, at least, very | much more rapid and regular communica- < tion than at present. The Tauranga County Council have taken up the construction of this track with energy, and appear determined to have the work carried out at an early date. The Council recently invited tenders for the construction of the track, which were opened at the meeting of Tauranga County Council on Monday last as follows:—C. Kennedy, Tauranga, ; £1,173; W. Gray, £1,183; J. j Wiseman, Waitoa, £1,336 10s ; Dillon and j McCabe, Waitoa, £1,463; and J. Brain, | Tauranga, £2,250. As the balance of the j unexpended grant in the hands of the Government is only £960, an application is j to be made for enough to enable the Council to accept the lowest tender, and we hope the request will be complied with, the work being one of great importance. The track at its greatest altitude would be 400 feet lower than the top of the.existing Katikati j track. The distance from Shaftesbury^ to [ the end of the bush on the Katikati side will be about eleven miles, the steepest , grade not exceeding one in seventeen. From the end of the bush to where the I track would junction with the main Thames- i Tauranga Road is three miles ; this portion ' having been already formed by the Katikati Road Board; and the distance from Te Aroha to Shaftesbury being eight miles, the total length of the track would be about twenty two miles. The present intention is to make a horso track eight feet in width, to be widened into a coach road as funds will admit,
