GIRLS' FRIENDLY SOCIETY.

The annual festival of the Girls' Friendly Society was held last evening in St. Matthew's schoolroom. There was a large attendance of ladies, but the representatives of the sterner sex were few in number. They, however, included Revs. J. Bates, C. Ml Nelson, W. Tebbs, G. H. S. Walpole, and • Robjohns, • Major Dane, and Mr H. C. S. Baddeley, R.M. An excellent tea was provided at half-past six o'clock, the tables being presided over by the following ladies : — Associates: Mesdames Tebbs, Nelson, Walpole, Boardman, Nairn, W. Williams, Judd, Mclndoe, Purchas, Calvert. Hayward, Waddel, Hardwick, and McCosh Clark. Members: Misses Lush, Vickers, L. ■■ Vickers, Banks, Salmon, Heighten. lea was followed by a short service in the church, conducted by Rev. W. Tebbs. Rev. 0. M Nelson read the lesson from Corinthians, and Rev. W. Tebbs delivered a short address, in which he dwelt on the fact that all in this life have a mission, and urged on the members that perseverance and thoroughness were essential to themselves and to the Society. The entertainment in the schoolroom subsequently took the form of a conversazione. Several tables were covered with plain- and fancy needlework, etc., which had been made ■' by ' the members of the Society, and nearly all these found purchasers before the gathering terminated. ' A crazy quilt manufactured by the girls of All Saints', each girl doing a small portion of the worir, attracted considerable attention. might be exerted in the first insbance on bheir brothers, subsequenbly on their lovers, and evenbually on their husbands and in the family circle of their own home. Major Dana also delivered a capital address, urging his listeners to aim at thoroughness in everything they did, and exert their influence for good on all their surroundings. An excellent musical programme was presented, and included the following items :—duct, Misses Mclndoe and Braithwaite: song, "Sing, S^veeb Bud," Mrs Paynes ; song, " Very Nearly," ; Miss Scraggs ; song, "Golden Love," Mrs Barrett ; song, " When the Leaves Begin to Turn," Mrs McCill. Votes of thanks were passed to Mrs Judd for her paper, and Major Dane for his address, on the motion of bhe Rev. Mr Tebbs, and the gathering terminated.
