H.M.S. Calliope

H.M.S. Calliope, one of the recent additions to the Australian squadron, has arrived at Sydney, having been passed by the _a. Leichhard. on the 9th inst. off the Tweed River. The Calliope comes from the China station. She is described by those r vho know her as a very powerful ship and a 11 lost important addition to the warships in thw southern seas. The Calliope is a steel co.rvette, built at Portsmouth in 1884 and' engined by Rennie. She is of 2,77.* tons displacement and 3,000 horse power and her dimensions are— length, 235 ft. : beam, 44ft. 6in. ; and depth, 18ft. Tin. The hull cost £82,000 and the mac_ir_ery £38,000. The vessel's armament consists' of four 6in. B.L.R. guns, 12 sin. B.L.R. guns, 10 machine guns and two light gums of 15cwt. each ; besides which she carriers a complement of Whitehead torpedoes. She has a coal capacity of 550 tons, and c&n steam 4,000 miles at a speed of 10 knots, but if necessary she can be driven at true rate of 13| knots an hour. Both for offensive and defensive purposes the CaT-ope will be the strongest ship on the station, excepting .only -the flagship Nelson.
