WHY? Dreaming;! Ay, dreaming of Wryreata, To reap tut sorrow, and grief, and woo, Climbing the ladder that tops the hills. But on\ly to fall in the depths below! And soarfof? ever in spring's sweet time, WiththSblessed lark, to heaven's gate; W «o^?h D elTenKbrea 3 \ the wave!-: Why sin? of hoixo with an aching hoart ToI stand by the side of a waiting grave? Why am I here? and what \ise am I i J only sing of the day* to be. B«| I cannot reach tfie crown I weave Nor feel the wealth of a spirit made free. Then why? Perchance some hidden power Uses- a heart and its treasured lore T °ifflffi?ffl o^S Sf Wghtor shore.; For how could a bird know freedom's worth Unless 'tw.4B caged some time in Hie i And how may a poet sing of hope. Unless his heart has bled in stnfo i And so this, perchance, may bei the wfttf My days are dark and the nights are long; God ever rises a, weary heart To lighten others with its heaven-eong! \V. K.
