The piue Qf £1 recently offered by the Waterbury Watch Company, in gouth Australia, for the beet pun on the watch ot the age, has been awarded to " Giles Scroggins " for tne following lines :— While Chaffey Broth ore water raise. To make men's hearts merry; Another firm mtfns equal praise Which aaee its Water-bur/. When Charley's fame Iβ dead and gone (Somedeem their scheme's romantic A faithful watch will still tick oh, From o'er the broad Atlantic.
What! Gone! Yes, sir, train left ten minutes ago. Why don't you a ?"
A man who stole a Waterbury Watch from a poor labourer the other day was fined and locked up by the Magistrates, horsewhipped by the watchmaker when he cairte out, a,nd afterwards nearly hurried into a brain fever by his wife. The clergyman of the parish alluded to the little affair in a sermon, and the local editor, for a wonder, agreed with the parson and reviewed tjie Qocijrreljce in print. All this time it was borne in upon the wretched man that he could have bought the watch from any storekeeper for 13e 6d, and have had it repaired any time at a cost of 2s 6d.
