THE AMERICAN ANARCHISTS.

Law has triumphed over Anarchy in the United States, and an ignominious death on the gallows has overtaken four of the misguided men who imagined that social wrongs were to be redressed by the murder of several policemen. The execution of the Chicago anarchists also marks the triumph of American common-sense and love of order over false sympathy with dangerous doctrines and their exponents. It is indeed the conspicuous fact that no matter how lenient public sentiment in. the Great Republic usually is towards individual murderers who may have committed their crime under the influence of strong passion or temptation, it is inexorable in denouncing and punishing lawlessness. While the fullest liberty of speech is allowed, any open hostility to law or threatened infringement of order is sternly and mercilessly repressed. It was the vigorous action of the police in dispersing riotous gatherings in Chicago that led to the outrage, for which four men have just paid the penalty with their lives. A typical instance of the same energetic dealing with anarchists took place in New York on Bth ult., when a mass meeting of the Progressive Labour Party in Union Square was attacked by the police, and many of those present were almost beaten to death. This action, if not quite upheld by popular opinion, was so lightly viewed that an apology from Police-Captain Eeilly to the" effect that his men had made a " mistake " was accepted as sufficient to meet the case.

In European countries the case of the condemned anarchists at Chicago excited more sympathetic agitation than it did within the United States. About 1,500 Socialists met in London, and were harangued by Prince Krapotkine, Stepmak, Mrs Besant, William Morris, and others of less note—the latter making a bold bid for notoriety by the violence of their remarks. All the speakers showed a total lack of information on the subject, and a little extract will give an idea of the kind of " facts" employed to harrow the feelings of the London Socialists. Referring to the treatment of the Chicago prisoners, one of the orators said :—

My blood boils when I think of the sufferings to which the working-men of Chicago have been subjected in the hope that in their agony they would "peach" on their comrades. They were imprisoned in what are called sweat-box2s—dark cells, five feet high and four broad. The walls and beds are attached to galvanic batteries, turned on afc the will of a turnkey. The hopeless prisoner can neither sleep nor rest. Through secret windows, powerful, many-coloured lights are turned on suddenly, and the prisoner goes wild with fear. Late at night ■scoundrelly Irish hirelings are let in the cell to belabor the prisoner with clubs till dawn, to be'commenced another night and continued till he expresses his willingness to testify to a District Attorney what may have been necessary to a conviction. In vain, however, did this meeting protest against the "judicial assassination" and groan against the American Constitution; in vain, too, was the appeal of the Extreme Left of the French Chamber of Deputies for mercy to the doomed men; and equally futile were the more recent "parades, of the New York anarchists, which were evidently meant to intimidate the authorities although the leaders, with
