GENERAL SCHAW.

His Humoured Appointment as Commander of the Forces.

General Schaw arrived from the North on Sunday having been sent for by Ministers to consult on Defence matters. There is some talk of his being apppinted to the post of Commander of the Colonial Forces. judge Johnston has been granted a year's leave of absence, and -Judge Ward is appointed to temporary charge of Canterbury District. ■ In a later telegram our correspondent S ays:-~Tbe Minister for Defence informs me that Major-General Schaw, who has already reported on some of the Australian harbour.*., will be asked to inspect and report on N T ew Zealand fortifications. There is no intention to appoint him to the command of the Colonial Forces. Tn place of making costly appointments in the Defence Department the expenditure on it will be reduced to the smallest limits consistent with the safety of our harbours' defences.
