Eden.

The principal polling place for the Eden district being Waite's Mount Eden Hall, it was there that the result of the contest was waited for by the greater number of those who were interested in the returns. About 7 p.m., some of the out - district results were received by messengers on horseback, and about 7.20 p.m. Mr M. Niccol, Returning Officer, announced the result of the

poll at Mount Eden Hall, viz. : Mitchelson, 524; Connell, 289. The announcement was received with cheers. Mr Mitchelson and Mr Connell, who were present, shook hands, and tlie former returned thanks for the honour conferred upon him. Mr Connell thanked those who had voted for him very sincerely. They had, he said,, elected the best man according to their own views, and he would bow to their decision. The returns for this district are as follows :— Mitchelson. Connell. Mount Eden 524 289 Avondale 144 67 Titirangi 18 2 Mount Albert 68 19 Henderson 41 21 Waikomiti 21 21 Mount Roskill 49 32 Waitakerei ... 23 8 Huia Sawmills 13 6 i Total 901 465 Majority for Mitchelson, 436. There were three informal vote 3at Henderson. At Avondale, great interest was manifested in the result of the elections. Notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather, men were found willing to ride in to Avondale with the returns from the more distant polling places. By 7 o'clock Mr Alexander Macky brought in the returns from Titirangi, and shortly afterwards Mr Watson Duncan arrived with the state of the poll at Henderson. Still another settler was found willing to ride in over 12 miles with the returns from the Waitakerei polling-booth. Parnell. Of the three polling stations in this constituency, viz., Parnell, Newmarket and Parliament-street, that ,at Newmarket having been the least resorted to should have had its return out the earliest. As ithappened, however, the Parliament-street returns, despite their larger numbers, were made up more expeditiously and were known much sooner. Even when the Newmarket returns were made up tlie Deputy Returning Officer (young Mr Purchas), with stupid and unreasoning persistence, refused to communicate the results to our reporter, but despatched two men with them to the Parnell Hall. In spite of Mr Purchas, however, the reporter speedily secured the figures and transmitted them by telephone to the Star Office, where they arrived in time to allay the apprehension raised by the Parliament-street returns. At 9 o'clock Captain Thomas announced the full returns as follows from the Parnell Hall:— Moss George Parliament street 195 295 Newmarket 117 78 Parnell ...336 245 Totals 648 618

Majority for Moss, 30. , There were two informal votes. The large crowd which had been patiently awaiting the result under the verandahs adjacent to the hall or out in the drizzling rain cheered so lustily that the sound of their voices reached to the top of Shortlandstreet. Mr Moss briefly returned thanks for the honour the electors had again done him, and Mr Seymour George likewise cordially thanked his supporters for their support, which had very nearly resulted in victory. Mr Moss was followed all the way to his home, some two miles distant, by a crowd of from 300 to 400 persons, who cheered him lustily at short intervals, and wished to carry him shoulder high, but refrained at his request.
