AUCKLAND COLLEGE AND GRAMMAR SCHOOL.

The usual meeting of the Board of Governors of the Auckland College and Grammar School was held yesterday afternoon. Present : Sir Maurice O'Rorke (presiding) the Mayor (Mr A. E. Devore), Colonel Haultain, Rev. C. M. Nelson, and Messrs S. Luke, Graves Aickin, J. M. Lennox, J. Upton. The Registrar, Dr. Kidd, was in atbendance, also Mr Bourne, Head-master of the Grammar School.

Night School Science Master. — A letter was received from the Board of Education thanking the Council for appointing Mr Carson as science master for tho free night school. Mr Carson also wrote thanking the Council for his appointment. He reported upon the members attending the school, showing an average attendance of 120. Colonel Haultain stated that he had visited the school and was fully satisfied with the results.

Collector's Remuneration, — A letterwas read from Mr O. Mays, asking the Board to grant an increase of his fees as collector of rents. The Chairman said that Mr Mays was an excellent official, and he would be prepared to grant an increase of his remuneration. At present he only received ab bhe rate of £125 per annum.— Colonel Haulbain said bhab Mr Ewington had seen him, and said that if an increase was to be made he thought it would only be right that the position should be open to competition. For his part, Mr Ewington was willing to do the work for two per cent., as paid at present.—A letter was also read from Mr R. B. Shalders, offering to do the work for two per cent, if Mr Mays was nob prepared to continue at that rate of remuneration.—Mr Upton thought that in the face of such offers they could not increase the percentage allowed to Mr Mays.—Mr Lennox favoured giving MiMays a small bonus for the extra labours performed by him.—Mr Arckin doubted whether the Board would gain anything by changing their collector.—Mr Upton objected to giving any gratuity. —The Chairman suggested that they should refund Mr Mays the last iwo years' guarantee premium, which would amount to £15. —On the motion of Mr Upton, it was decided to pay in future the guarantee premium. On the motion of Mr Nelson it was also decided to refund Mr Mays the £15 already paid. Accounts.—The ordinary accounts were authorised for payment, after which the Board went into committee, to consider the appointment of a junior master for the Grammar School.

Upon the Board resuming,it was resolved, upon the recommendation of the Board in committee, to appoint Mr Davenport to the position of junior master.
