NEW YACHT FOR SYDNEY.
The success of the Auckland-built yacht Waitangi against the leading yachts in Australia in the recent Intercolonial Yacht Races sailed at Sydney, induced her owner, Mr A. G. Milson, to think of getting a yacht built which would be strictly representative of that port. A few weeks ago he called for tenders, and after consideration accepted that of the well-known ship and yacht builder, Mr George Ellis, of Balmain, A start was immedietely made by Mr Ellis, and he has successfully cast her lead keel, which is the heaviest lead casting ever made in the colonies. The weight of the keel is 30 tons, and its dimensions are : Length 26ft, by 2ft. 6in. deep, and 3ft. 6in. broad. The dimensions of Mr Milson's new yacht are as follows :—Overall, 71ft. ; depth of hold, 9ft. ; beam, 12ft. 9in. ; draught of water, 9ft. ; and she will measure 40 tons. Her frames are to be alternately natural hardwood and bent timber, the natural frame being 3in. sided. Her planking is to be ljin., the bottom to be of Oregon, and the top sides of kauri. Her deck planking is to be of narrow yellow pine 2in. thick. Her mast, which is now ready for her, is 32ft. from deck to hounds'; the topmast is 35ft., boom 52ft., gaff 35ft., and bowsprit 22ft. outboard. Her sails are to be by Lapthorne, the famous English sail makers. The yacht is to be ready for launching on or before November 14th next, and the work of fitting her out is to be completed in time to permit of her trial trip on December Ist. She is to bo rigged as a cutter for the 1887-8 racing season, and afterwards she will be rigged as a yawl for pleasure sailing.
