AIR THOMSONS DEPARTURE.
Presentation to Him by the
Police Force
'The popularity of Mr Superintendent Thomson with his. subordinates,is probably the best evidence of that gentleman's qualities as an officer and a gentleman. Some week ago, when it became definitely known that Mr Thomson's removal had been decided, on, the members of the force took in' hand the getting up of a valedictory testimonial amongst themselves. As the rules, of the .service preclude such presentation, the men got over the difficulty; by deciding that Mrs Thomson should be the recipient of their gift. A large sum of money was collected in two or three days,, and a solid silver tea and cofi'ee service, valued at sixty guineas, has been purchased. The presentation is suitably inscribed, and .will form a pleasing memento to Mrs Thomson and her family of the'respect in which her worthy husband is held by the men he has had the honour for so. may years to com, mand. This feeling of esteem is heartily reciprocated by Mr Thomson, who has given expression to his feelings in the following official ■-'' District Order ■:—" The member^ of the force 'serving within the Auckland police district are hereby notified that on and after this date the command of above district will be transferred ;£6. Inspector Shearman (late of Wellington), between whom and Inspector Thomson an exchange of districts has been effected. Inspector Thomson takes this opportunity of wishing a cordial 'good-bye' to the members of the force hitherto serving under' his command (the majority of them for many years), but his sincere regret, at parting.with them is much lessened,' by"the'reflection that ,he is to be relieved of hik charge by an officer of the acknowledged experience and high character of Mr, Shear; man, who is succeeding" to the commaiid!of a body of men of whom any officer might feel proud, and who, by their efficiency and respectability, are a credit to themselves and to the Department: to-whiph^-they belong." ; i
