We learn that the referee appointed by the Borough of Palmerston North to report upon the competitive schemes open to New Zealand for water supply and dranage of the borough has placed two schemes for the water-supply, to cost L20,0Q0 each, prepared by Mr W. F, Hubbard, C.E., hydraulic and sanitary engineer of this city, first in ordei- of merit, and compliments the author in very high terms upon the thorough manner in which his plans and reports have been prepared. The referee also places Mr Hubbard's drainage scheme, to cose L 58,000, 'first in order of merit, provided it can be held that a clause in the Municipal Corporations Act which came into force at the beginning of this year has not been infringed. In connection with the death ofMrG. W. Bishop, who was shot by a woman at San Francisco, we learn that the deceased left Auckland early in March last on the advice of Mr W. J. Napier, his solicitor, in order to collect evidence and materials in the United States for an important case in which Mr Bishop was interested. He arrived in San Francisco in excellent health, and proceeded about the business on which he was engaged under one of the leading solicitors in San Francisco. Communications were constantly received from him. Mr Bishop had acquired con' siderable wealth in business in New Zealand. He was latterly a chemist at Gis borne, and many years ago was a chemist and photographer at the Thames. Before leaving for America he made his will, which will be proved in due course before the Supreme Court. The deceased had many friends at Gisborne, Auckland and the Thames, and was a quiet, unobtrusive man. He was also a man of considerable mental culture.

To the Editor: Sir,—Amidst all the shrieking about retrenchment, there is not a single candidate who has had the manliness to'say one word ■in favour of what Catholics have done in saving the country a half million pounds since the Education Act passed ; nor what it would cost the country if the Catholics were now to throw all their children on the State for education. But there is no fear of that alternative, as they will never avail themselves of a system which, indirectly bub surely, inculcates pure principles of atheism in the minds of the children.—l am, etc., J. J. Crofts.
